1. Where are you located?

We are based on the South coast of Dorset in a picturesque town called Swanage. Our workshop is located at Godlingston Manor. A National Trust farm nestled under the Purbeck Hills. You are more than welcome to drop by, just let us know you are coming.

2. What timber do you use?

At Fantails Garden Furniture we pride ourselves in using the right timbers for our furniture. We use PEFC certified Western Red Cedar in our Adirondack Chairs, Swing Seats, Foot stools and Tables. The PEFC certification means the timber can be traced back to the original tree in the forest in Western Canada. The PEFC aims are:

“The stewardship and use of forests and forest land in a way, and at a rate, that maintains their biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and their potential to fulfil now and in the future, relevant ecological, economic and social functions at local, national and global levels and does not cause damage to other ecosystems.”

Western Red Cedar is one of the most durable timbers in the world. It has an aromatic fragrance which can be retained for long periods of time and it also contains a natural preservative which is resistant to fungal attack. The durable wood is soft and ideal for outside use, such as garden furniture, shingles, canoes, green houses and cladding.

Some native tribes living on northwest coast of America depended extensively on the tree, not only making wooden objects but also using the bark and roots for domestic items such as ropes, blankets and even clothing; while the wood was used in the curing and cooking of fish.

We also use FSC certified Treated European Redwood in our Pergola Frames and as an alternative to Western Red Cedar in our Adirondack Chairs, Swing Seats, Foot stools and Tables.

FSC forest management certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability. FSC-certified forests are managed to strict environmental, social and economic standards.

The redwood is milled to our own specifications and then treated using a special pressurized system where the preservative is forced into the wood fibres. This ensures the preservative penetrates all the way through the wood.
